Progress continues to be made around New York state on the Erie Canalway Trail.
Parks & Trails New York reports that the planned 360-mile multiuse trail is 80 percent complete, with 288 miles open to the public. When the remaining gaps are closed, about 200 communities along the canal's route will be connected by an off-road trail.
There is no hard date for completion. Organizers say it may be possible to have the remaining 72 miles of trail underway or planned by the fall of 2017, the bicentennial of the start of construction on the original Erie Canal.
