The villages of East Aurora and Lewiston top the list of Western New York communities ranked the safest place to life in the state, according to a new analysis by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.
East Aurora ranks 27th out of 142 large communities in New York state. Lewiston ranks 41st.
The rankings are based on violent and property information from the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report along with population data and internal research from the NCHSS, a trade association made up of home security professionals nationwide that advocates for safe communities and home safety.
Communities with populations under 10,000 were not included in the rankings, nor were cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.
Also scoring high locally were Orchard Park (47th), Lancaster (48th), West Seneca (54th), and Evans (61st). The town of Lewisboro in Weschester County ranked 1st. Buffalo (141st) and Niagara Falls (142nd) ranked at the very bottom of the list.
