Drunk driver pleads guilty in New Year's Day crash

Abdikadir Jaffar of Utica faces a maximum of up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced on November 28th. 

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault today in Erie County Court.

On January 1st, 2017, Jaffar was driving recklessly on Richmond Avenue in Buffalo. He struck Anthony Hill's car, causing his passenger, 20-year-old Anabellin Cruz, to suffer a concussion. 

Jaffar was also accused of striking a pole and snapping it off. Officials say he then drove onto the sidewalk and hit several people, including:

  • 16-year-old Nathan Kahn of Buffalo
  • 15-year-old Benjamin Weigel of Orchard Park
  • 62-year-old Christopher Sheppard

He had .22 BAC, which is twice the legal limit.
