The Erie County Sheriff's Department says officers collected 762 pounds of prescription medication during its Spring Prescription Drug Take-Back Day last Saturday.

During the event, residents could turn in expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at a special collection point at the Bertrand Chaffee Hospital.  These medications can be dangerous when left in medicine cabinets.

The Sheriff's Office has also collected 1,778 pounds of prescription medications through various permanent drug drop off sites. All 2,540 pounds of medicine will be safely burned over the next couple of days.

The Sheriff’s Office has collected and disposed of over 25-tons of medications since establishing the prescription drug drop off program in Erie County with twenty-eight location countywide.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
