Downtown Niagara Falls homes to get free fixer-upper

Home need a little sprucing up? 

More than 220 volunteers from 25 Niagara County-based organizations will "Rock the Block" in Downtown Niagara Falls tomorrow.

The organizations will join forces to participate in the Niagara University-led "Rock the Block" program that links local homeowners and tenants with business reps to perform minor housing repairs. 

Some services include painting, landscaping, and general cleanup.

The event will takes place today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with groups meeting at 256 Niagara Street. 

These organizations include: 

  • Niagara University,
  • Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center,
  • the Niagara Falls City School District,
  • Verizon.

Organizers say about 35 houses, 10 alleys, and 75 vacant lots will be improved as part of the effort.

Fast fact: About 20 percent of homes remain empty and 56 percent of Niagara Falls residents are homeowners in the Falls.
