Western New York recognized local veterans for Purple Heart Day on Sunday, August 7th.  Several downtown buildings were lit purple to honor servicemen and women who are recipients of the Purple Heart.

Erie County is a recognized Purple Heart County.  The Peace Bridge was also lit purple to recognize the sacrifice of Western New York veterans.

Robert Segool served during the Vietnam War.  He's a Purple Heart recipient and was born and raised in Orchard Park.  He is happy the city came together to honor the sacrifice of veterans.

"It means a lot to me because it gives me a moment to think back to my own life and what war was really like," he said.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and a group of veterans from Chapter 187 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart watched the Electric Tower get lit purple together.
