Erie County Sheriff's Office says a deputy tried stopping a vehicle in the Town of Aurora on Tuesday when the driver refused to stop and sped away, almost hitting a passing vehicle head on.

Deputies say the driver pulled into a parking lot on Emery Road, got out of the car and ran behind some buildings.

More deputies were called for help and the area was searched. Deputies followed footprints in the snow and tracked down Ryan Damude, 26, to a residence on Route 16 in the Town of Wales.

Officials say they found Damude hiding in a one-year-old's bedroom closet.

The Sheriff's Office says Damude is charged with felony counts of burglary, illegally entering a dwelling and aggravated unlicensed operation. He is also charged with six separate misdemeanor counts, some of which are criminal trespass, obstruction, unlawful fleeing, reckless driving and DWI.

Damude was also given four tickets for vehicle and traffic violations.

Damude is being held at the Erie County Holding Center pending a court date on January 12.
