NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) — A flight with 16 Reserve Citizen Airmen equipped with gear and supplies departed the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Wednesday headed to New York City and the surrounding areas to support the fight against COVID-19.
11 nurses from the 914th Aeromedical Staging Squadron (ASTS) in Niagara Falls and five from the 934th ASTS at Minneapolis-St. Paul ARS, Minnesota are heading to the New York Tri-State area that has been hit hardest by COVID-19.
Some were notified just 72 hours before departure and will not know where they are assigned until they arrive. They expect to work 12-hour shifts during their six-month deployment.
"This is a medical war. Our brave nurses are deploying to the front lines and leaving their families, friends and jobs to fight in the battle. I have the utmost respect for all of them and thank them for their service. I can't say it enough – they are true heroes," said 914th ASTS commander, Lt. Col. Shelley Durante.
