BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Some of Buffalo's first responders are taking the brunt when it comes to the spread of COVID-19 in Western New York. Four of the 100 plus Erie County cases of COVID-19 are from people who work for the Buffalo Police Department. A total of 10 officers are away from work due to quarantine.

Despite those numbers, Captain Jeff Rinaldo said don't expect to see a drop in coverage in the city.

"Based on our daily number of officers out sick, we're actually below that number. So, we are in a very good staffing position," said Rinaldo.

Law enforcement across Erie County, New York State and the nation continue to take steps to make sure they aren't spreading or contracting COVID-19.

The union leader who represents Buffalo Police officers says his biggest concern is one most industries have. He believes BPD should have provided more protective gear for officers, sooner.
