Child ejected from boat in tubing accident

Posted

Deputies with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office say a 4-year-old is recovering after a scary tubing accident over the weekend.

Officials say a family was tubing on Chautauqua Lake Sunday when several children decided to switch to skiing. They brought the tube into the boat while they skied, deputies say. That's when a four-year-old boy started playing under the tube in the bow of the boat.

Investigators say due to the winds, the tube was lifted with the youngster hanging on to it. While being ejected, the child struck the split windshield of the boat, lacerating his groin and fracturing his ankle.

Everyone on the boat was wearing life jackets according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies say the fact the child was wearing one and the quick response of family members, he was immediately recovered form the lake and rushed to shore at Chautauqua Institution.

The family and child were treated and then flown to Buffalo Women and Children's Hospital.
