The Cheektowaga Town Board voted Monday night to approve a site plan for the long vacant Garden Village Plaza.

The plaza is located at French and Union Roads and once housed the former Ames Department Store.

Benderson Development owns the property and submitted a proposal to town officials earlier this year.

The approved version of the plan calls for the former Ames Department Store to be refaced and converted into a warehouse/office facility. The development company will also construct three additional warehouses on the site.

According to Cheektowaga Town Councilman James Rogowski, one of the buildings will be used for business offices, and the others will be used for "modern industrial" purposes.

Town officials believe demolition will begin as early as next month, and new construction will begin in early 2017.

The development is expected to create 300 fulltime jobs in Cheektowaga.
