A Cheektowaga man could spend up to a year in prison after he admits he embezzled $50,000 from a South Buffalo school.

57-year-old Dennis Potozniak pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court to embezzlement charges that stem from when he was an administrator at Notre Dame Academy in South Buffalo.

Prosecutors say Potozniak gifted himself thousands of dollars while working as a Business Administrator at the school. He declared himself the winner of multiple school cash sweepstakes between 2014 and 2017, and wrote dozens of checks to himself, depositing the money in his personal bank account.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn says the investigation began when the Buffalo Catholic Diocese did an audit of the school, and followed the paper trail.

When sentenced in February, Potozniak could spend up to a year in jail.
