On Tuesday the Town of Amherst Engineering Department released their plans for new sidewalks along Casey Road. The road extends to Transit Road in Amherst, and connects to both Casey Middle School and Williamsville North High School.

"The whole idea is to improve the pedestrian and bicycle safety, especially with the proximity of the schools" Project Manager Tom Pericak said.

A $1.2 million grant would be used to create new sidewalks and bike lanes on the north side of Erie County owned Casey Road. This construction would also decrease the amount of road by about a foot while expanding the amount of walking space.

"When you narrow a travel lane, it tends to calm or slow speeds."

The hope is the plan will begin construction in 2019, and be completed in 2020.
