BOSTON, MA (WKBW) — The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) announced Saturday the first case of novel coronavirus in Massachusetts was confirmed in a man in his 20s from Boston.
The BPHC says the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the positive test results late Friday.
The man recently traveled to Wuhan, China and sought medical care following his return. He remains in isolation until he is cleared by public health officials.
This is the eighth confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in the United States.
"We are grateful that this young man is recovering and sought medical attention immediately,'' said Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel, MD. MPH. "Massachusetts has been preparing for a possible case of this new coronavirus, and we were fortunate that astute clinicians took appropriate action quickly. Again, the risk to the public from the 2019 novel coronavirus remains low in Massachusetts."
Thursday the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2019 Novel Coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency.
Friday the Trump administration declared a public health emergency in response to the novel coronavirus.
