The Buffalo Zoo is getting $500,000 from the state toward its plans to renovate its Marlin Perkins-designed reptile house.

The 1942 building was designed by Perkins when he was curator of the Buffalo Zoo. He went on to host "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom" on television from 1963-1985.

Under the renovation, the interior brick walls and brass railings will be preserved but all of the animal exhibits will be replaced by self-contained habitats.

Plans also include adding an exhibit to showcase the zoo's work breeding endangered amphibians.

The entire project will cost $2.5 million. The state share comes from the office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
