Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.

Except the bugs are biting, according to Orkin Pest & Termite Control.

Orkin's Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list puts Buffalo at number 18.

Orkin has released the bed bug city rankings for the last six years. The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin had the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2015 to November 30, 2016.

"We have more people affected by bed bugs in the United States now than ever before," says Orkin Entomologist and Director of Technical Services Ron Harrison. "They were virtually unheard of in the U.S. ten years ago."

Almost all pest professionals nationwide have treated bed bugs in the past year, according to a 2015 "Bugs without Borders Survey."

Bed bugs can easily spread from place to place, whether it be in luggage, purses or other belongings. And they're not only found in beds. They can even live in your office.

"Anyone can get bed bugs in their home," said Harrison. "They are not a sign of uncleanliness. Bed bugs only need blood to survive. We have treated for bed bugs in everything from million dollar homes to public housing."

The first signs of bed bugs are usually the bugs themselves or small dark stains they can leave behind. When fully grown, they are about the size of an apple seed.

Orkin recommends checking your home regularly for bed bugs. Harrison says he checks every time he changes his sheets.
