A Buffalo man pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to several charges in a stabbing death.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn says Hillard Smith, 46, broke into his ex-girlfriend's house on April 12 and attacked her boyfriend.

Officials say Smith broke into the residence at 518 North Division Street and stabbed 42-year-old Justin Johnson with a knife. Johnson was transported to Erie County Medical Center and died of his injuries five days later.

Smith is charged with first and second degree murder, burglary, assault, two counts of menacing, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of criminal contempt.

Smith faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of all charges.
