A Buffalo man pleaded guilty to misusing food stamps in court on Thursday.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn says 37-year-old Ahmed Alshami admitted to buying EBT (food stamp) cards from people willing to trade them for cash.

The DA says Alshami, the owner and operator of IGA Express Mart on Ludington Street in the City of Buffalo, usually bought the cards for half the amount of their worth. He would then use them to fund shopping trips to purchase items to sell in his store, according to DA Flynn.

Alshami faces three and two-thirds to 11 years in prison.
