On Saturday morning the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York hosted Secure Your ID Day at the Tops Market on Union Road in Cheektowaga.

Teaming up with Tops, AT&T, Shred-It, Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce and West Seneca Chamber of Commerce, community members brought their old documents for free on-site shredding.

Volunteers from the partnering organizations were also on hand to assist and provide cybersecurity tips.

BBB of Upstate New York encourages the shredding of old sensitive or secure documents because of the threat that identity theft poses. According to officials, in the past six years, ID thieves have stolen over $107 billion.

A spokesperson for the BBB said nearly 1,000 people were serviced today.
