Firefighters in Batavia are responding to a two-alarm fire on South Jackson Street, across from the Jackson School.

Students at the school have been evacuated but the school says everyone is safe.

Authorities say the fire started Wednesday morning in a back apartment and then spread to a workshop attached to the building. They say it appears the wind helped spread the fire from one building to another.

Several explosions were reported inside the workshop. Officials say multiple people had to be checked for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Batavia City Schools says all students have been moved to Ascension Hall on Sumner Street. Students may be picked up and signed out by their parents there.

Batavia schools says busing will begin at 11:30 a.m.. If no one is home, the school says students will be brough back to Ascension Hall.
