Baby Shawn leads walk to bring awareness for pediatric cancer

Posted

A walk to raise money and awareness towards pediatric cancer was held on Friday right at Niagara Falls led by Baby Shawn Kennedy, the six-year-old boy who was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

Baby Shawn, who has a tumor lodged in his spinal chord, has been given good news recently as his tumor has been stable.

The walk, which was sponsored by Go 4 The Goal and the PUNT foundation aimed to bring awareness to pediatric cancer which organizers say is underfunded by the federal government.

According to organizers only 4 percent of federal funding goes towards pediatric cancer research which, according to Baby Shawn's mom, is leading to no signs of a cure.

"Our children don't get enough funding," Nicole Vathy, Shawn's mother said, "There is not enough research and especially for what Shawn has there's nothing to help it right now."

The walk aimed to raise $7,500 towards pediatric cancer research, and as of Friday, they are about $1,000 short of that goal.
