Amherst factory to close by March

A local plant that makes oxygen containers and compressors notified its employees today that it will be closing.

Employees at Chart Industries, located in Amherst, were told around 10 a.m. Monday that the plant would be closing its doors by early March.

One viewer tells 7 Eyewitness News that employee work weeks had already been cut down to four days. According to one employee at this morning's meeting, everyone is guaranteed a job until February 10, 2017.

A pess release issued by Chart Industries Monday after cites the company is restructuring within its BioMedical Group to capture future growth in the respiratory products industry.

As a result of the restructuring, the company "expects to consolidate a majority of its U.S. respiratory operation and engineering activities into the existing Canton, GA campus, relocate key personnel, and suspend production and engineering of respiratory products at its Amherst, NY facility."
