A man who returned to the scene of an earlier accident in search of his ejected puppy faces DWI charges, according to State Police.

Hamburg resident Douglas Coble, 50, was involved in a one-vehicle accident on Route 219 Friday morning near Genesee Road. A witness told Troopers that a truck traveling north had lost control, swerved into the passing lane and then back into the driving lane, before rolling onto its passenger side in a snow bank. The driver then got out, freed the truck, and drove off.

While troopers were speaking with the witness, Coble returned to the scene to look for his German Shepherd puppy that had been ejected from the truck in the accident. While speaking with Coble, troopers say they observed signs of alcohol impairment.  He was found to be intoxicated after a series of field sobriety tests and placed under arrest.

Erie County Sheriff's deputies assisting at the scene found the injured dog a short distance from the accident. The dog was transported to the Springville Animal Hospital for treatment of a large cut on its front leg.

Coble is due in Concord Town Court next month.
