All 34 pet cats that were housed in wooden shed behind a home on Braley Road in the Town of Porter perished when a fire heavily damaged the structure Saturday morning.

Firefighters from the Ransomville Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene around 9:30 a.m. and were successful in extinguishing the blaze and keeping it away from the main residence.

The shed, a 12' x 20' structure, was housing 34 pet cats. All perished in the blaze.

Niagara County SPCA shelter manager Kelley Casale says the residence had no history of animal cruelty complaints.

She says the homeowner likely took in strays but failed to neuter and spay them, causing the cats to multiply. She calls the fire deaths horrific.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Niagara County Fire Investigation Unit.
