Dunkirk is once again hosting a big summertime event on its waterfront. The "Dunkirk Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix & Airshow" will take place on Sunday August 19th.
Dunkirk held airshows the past two summers that drew tens-of-thousands of people. It is hoped the powerboat races, which feature million-dollar boats from across the country, will also draw big crowds.
The boats are capable of reaching speeds up to 130 miles per hour and the race will be streamed live around the globe.
Mayor Wilfred Rosas said the races are part of a master plan to bring more attention to Dunkirk's waterfront, spur development and create a positive economic impact.
Dunkirk has scheduled a whole weekend of events leading up to the race. The public is invited to come see the boats up close and talk with race crews. An area next to the Clarion Hotel on Lakeshore Drive is currently the powerboat village where the equipment is parked.
