Indiana Jones fans have something to look forward to in 2022: Harrison Ford will officially be continuing his iconic character’s journey in a new yet-to-be-titled film!

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ford said filming could begin as early as April 2020, with an initial release date of July 2021. Disney has now confirmed, however, that the fifth installment of the franchise is currently in pre-production, writing on Twitter that it is now slated to hit theaters in July 2022.

Disney hasn’t revealed any plot details for this fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, but we do know it will be directed by James Mangold. Mangold has not previously directed an Indiana Jones film, but his credits include “Ford v Ferrari” and “The Wolverine.”

The first three movies in the franchise are considered to be among the best action-adventure films of all time. “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the 1981 film directed by Steven Spielberg, launched the Indy franchise and ensured that Ford wouldn’t forever be known only as Han Solo to moviegoers.

“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984) and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989) followed the first film, seemingly closing the popular 1980s trilogy with a last hurrah that starred Sean Connery as Indy’s father.

Then came 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008), which garnered mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

With the fifth movie, Ford will mark 40 years of playing the beloved archaeologist who hates snakes and never loses his hat, and the 78-year-old actor is clearly not eager to relinquish the role to the next generation. In an interview with “Today” in 2019, Ford joked around about who else could possibly play Indy in a reboot.

“Nobody is going to be Indiana Jones, don’t you get it?” he said as he laughed and threw a hand onto “Today” co-host Craig Melvin’s shoulder. “I’m Indiana Jones.”

“When I’m gone, he’s gone. It’s easy.”

We love Ford’s ownership of the role and can’t wait to see him on screen as Indiana Jones again soon!
