In the parking lot of Tops Markets at Grant & Amherst, volunteers spent part of their Memorial Day Monday gathering, sorting, and bundling donated goods to feed local families-in-need.
Project Ramadan is an initiative organized by the Western New York Muslims Organization to help the needy during the month of Ramadan. Each basket is designed to help feed a family of 4-5 people for one month.
In New York State alone, one in every three children are living in households with a food shortage, organizers say.
“We have a lot of people who are donating their time, their money, so they can provide food for the needy,” organizer Sahar Siam says.
Last year, the group handed out 500 baskets.
