Healthier Happy Meals are coming to a McDonald’s near you.

Starting in June, the fast food chain will remove cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meal menu. Although parents can order them in Happy Meals by request.

The chain will also reduce the size of fries in Happy Meals. All efforts to cut down on calories, sodium, and sugar consumed by kids. McDonald’s wants to get Happy Meals 600 calories or less.

"We recognize the opportunity that we have to support families as one of the most visited restaurants in the world, and remain committed to elevating our food,” said Steve Easterbrook, McDonald's President and CEO.

Bottled water will be added to Happy Meals later this year. McDonald’s also pledged to offer more fruits, veggies, and grains.
In 2011, McDonald's added apple slices to Happy Meals. Soda came off the menu in 2013.

Some doctors say this is good news for Erie County. According to the  United Way,  in 2012, 32 percent of children in Erie County were diagnosed as obese or overweight. That number rose from 28 percent in 2008.
