Police identify boys in double fatal Thruway crash

State Police have identified the young victim's of Monday's fatal crash on the State Thruway in Ontario County.

Police say brothers Amir Middleton, 9, and Shamel Middleton, 11, both from Buffalo, died at the scene.

The driver, Sean Ferguson, 31, also from Buffalo, is in critical condition at Strong Hospital.

The passenger in the car and mother of the children, Shenaya Washington, 34, from Buffalo, was also taken to Strong Hospital. She has non-life threatening injuries.

At the time of the accident, the car overturned the westbound lanes after hitting a guardrail around 5:45 a.m.

A statement from the principal at Buffalo United Charter School, where Amir and Shamel went to school, expresses the school community's sadness of this loss.

"The entire Buffalo United Charter School community is saddened by the loss of our two scholars, Amir and Shamel Middleton," said Principal Tammy Messmer. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends as they deal with this difficult loss. As a school community, we will continue to share our memories and remember fondly both young scholars. Grief counselors will be on hand for all students and staff in the coming days."

Police continue to investigate the accident and what caused it.
