Brothers, 9 and 11, killed in Thruway crash

Two brothers, ages 9 and 11 from the Buffalo area, were killed in a crash this morning on the New York State Thruway in Ontario County.

State police say a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder carrying four people overturned in the westbound lanes after hitting a guardrail. The crash happened around 5:44 a.m. between exits 42 and 43.

UPDATE: Police identify boys in double-fatal Thruway crash

The two boys were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 31 year-old man, was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester in critical condition.

The boys' mother suffered non life-threatening injuries.

State police tell 13 WHAM the family was returning home to the Buffalo area from Brooklyn.

A second vehicle, which was not involved in the crash, may have hit one of the children while driving past the scene in the dark. That vehicle, a green Honda, has since been located.

All westbound lanes of the Thruway near the crash scene was closed for more than six hours Monday.

Police are expected to release further information including names of the victims, on Tuesday morning.
