EDEN, N.Y. - An Eden man accused of killing his mother is being held without bail in Pennsylvania.
Police in Erie found Wayne Kozak, 48, at a motel Thursday, hours after Eden officers found his 79-year-old mother, Mary, fatally shot inside her East Eden Road home. Investigators said why this happened is still unknown.
"It's devastating. You don't think something like that will happen in your front yard -- literally," said neighbor Victoria Eschner.
She described Wayne Kozak as quiet. His second cousin, Henry Kozak, is also a neighbor. He said Wayne suffered from depression, and said his mother worried about him all the time.
"I talked to him two days before this happened, and he looked distressed," Henry Kozak said.
Kozak faces second degree murder charges in Western New York. He was arraigned in Erie (Pa.) District Court on a fugitive charge. A future court appearance will be held to determine the extradition process.
