To try to keep up with the growing data consumption, Verizon wireless is looking to install several cellular transmitters in Amherst, and some residents are saying not so fast.

Verizon Wireless tells 7 Eyewitness News, data consumption in the Buffalo area has nearly doubled year to year and to create keep up with the demand the company has paperwork to install nearly a dozen, 400 lb transmitters. The devices would sit on top of existing utility poles.

"The building department has received several requests," Town of Amherst Supervisor Barry Weinstein tells 7 Eyewitness News.

Weinstein says in addition to the request from Verizon, other companies including T-Mobile, AT&T, and Blue Wireless have also submitted requests.

The Town Supervisor says the board has not yet discussed the requests but neighbor concerns will be discussed at the next town meeting.

Until the next meeting, neighbors will continue to press Verizon for more information including long term health issues and safety concerns.
