A major event in the amateur sports world has kicked off in Western New York, and that means big business for the local economy.

The Gaelic Athletic Association's Continental Youth Championship began Thursday morning and runs through Sunday at the West Seneca Soccer Complex.

The games have drawn visitors to the region from as far away as California. Some 2,000 athletes ages six to 17 making up 250 teams are taking part.

According to the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission, the event is filling 5,000 hotel rooms and will pump $3 million into the Western New York economy.

The championships take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
