The coldest air of the winter season so far is poised to plunge out of the Arctic and arrive in WNY this weekend.

The lake effect snow machine is ready to fire up again and this time it will target Buffalo and the immediate suburbs with a wind whipped snow day on Friday.

The snow will begin during the morning drive and continue to intensify into the afternoon with snow rates up to 2 inches an hour.

An Arctic Front will arrive in the evening and sweep the lake snow band southward to the NY/PA line producing a burst of snow and wind as it moves though.

This storm will produce whiteouts and has the potential to pile up to a foot of fresh snow near Buffalo and the surrounding suburbs by the end of the day on Friday.

The core of the Arctic air will cross the Great Lakes sending daytime temperatures into the single digits on Saturday and overnight lows below zero.

This chilly shot will easily bring the coldest air the winter rivaling the bitter blast of last year when WNY suffered through the coldest February month in Buffalo history.
