Buffalo hearing on single payer healthcare system in NYS

Posted at 6:32 AM, Dec 10, 2014

Buffalo is the next stop in a series of statewide hearings on a proposal to establish a single-payer health care system in New York.

Wednesday's hearing in Buffalo will be the third on Assemblyman Richard Gottfried's proposed New York Health Act. The proposal would replace private health insurance with a publicly funded system.

Gottfried, who is chair of the Assembly Health Committee, says the move would save New Yorkers $20 billion a year by eliminating insurance company overhead and administrative costs.

The proposal is opposed by the insurance industry.

The hearing takes place at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute at 10 a.m. Before the session, Gottfried and some doctors, patients and others will explain their support.
