NEW YORK (WKBW) — Help is on the way for New Yorkers who have filed for unemployment.

An additional $600 payment is being made to New Yorkers who have filed for unemployment and the period covered by unemployment benefits has been extended for another 13 weeks, to a total of 39 weeks. The $600 payments started on Sunday and will continue once a week through the end of July.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement Wednesday afternoon, he said the state expects to be reimbursed by the Federal Government for the $600 payments under the federal CARES Act.

We're also going to make an additional $600 payment to all unemployed New Yorkers. The federal government says they will reimburse us for it, but people need money now in their pocket. New York will be doing that immediately. We're also extending the period coverage of unemployment benefits for an additional thirteen weeks. Goes from 26 weeks to 39 weeks. That should be a relief.
