The Buffalo Bills officially kicked off their search for a new general manager on Thursday. The team announced that they have interviewed Brandon Beane for the GM vacancy, not even a week after officially firing Doug Whaley.

Beane, 40, serves as the assistant general manager of the Carolina Panthers and has been with the organization since 1998. He and Bills head coach Sean McDermott worked together for the six seasons that McDermott was the defensive coordinator (2011-2016).

The Panthers assistant general manager is thought by many to be one of the strongest in-house candidates to take over in Carolina after the current GM retires. Dave Gettleman, 66, remains the GM of the Panthers and Beane works along with him.

Beane is the first to interview for the position, though The Houston Chronicle reported that the Bills will interview Texans director of player personnel Brian Gaine this week as well. The Bills have not yet confirmed the Gaine report.
