Town of Newstead celebrates Indigenous People's Day for the second year in a row

NEWSTEAD, N.Y. (WKBW) - Indigenous People's Day is gaining traction as a substitute to Columbus Day.

The Town of Newstead, Village of Akron and Tonawanda Seneca Nation celebrated the alternative holiday on Monday.

"Newstead will celebrate Indigenous People's Day for the second year in a row," said guest speaker Shannon Seneca. "Since last year, other towns, schools, cities and most recently the State of Vermont have decided to join in honoring those who were here first."
