Going green and switching to solar power may be cheaper than you think.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced plans create Solar Roof tiles on Friday that he says would cost about as much, or maybe even less, than a regular roof.
Musk says the Solar Roof would look better than a normal roof, last longer and have better insulation - all while generating electricity, which means your electricity bill would go down, too.
Tesla's Solar Roof tiles would be made of glass over a photovoltaic substrate. This would stand in for traditional roofing materials and look like a regular roof from the ground - an important feature, since the aesthetics of big, black silicon panels has been a discouraging aspect of solar power to some.
The solar company unveiled four styles of tiles: smooth glass, textured glass, Tuscan glass and slate glass.
Details on exact pricing have not been released yet, but according to Consumer Reports, the Tesla Solar Roof would have to cost no more than $73,500 installed to be competitive with an asphalt roof.
