SolarCity is making South Buffalo home. Construction on their $900 million dollar project should be complete this year and production of solar energy will begin.

The powerhouse energy company will be able to produce nearly 10,000 solar panels a day but they want their operation to grow.

SolarCity wants to lease land near Alden Correctional Facility and Big Sister Creek Wastewater Treatment Center. Erie County would then be able to purchase that power.

According to the county's website SolarCity could save the county $9.5 million in energy costs over the next 20 years.

During President Obama's last State of the Union he brought attention to New York's role as a leader in the production of renewable energy.

"On rooftops from Arizona to New York, solar is saving Americans tens of millions of dollars a year on their energy bills, and employs more Americans than coal -- in jobs that pay better than average," said Obama.

The Erie County Legislature is having a meeting to discuss the plans of leasing land, Tuesday at 4 p.m.
