People love dogs. They're like family. But what happens when the puppy love runs out? The puppy love between the owners, that is.

“A pet is a piece of property,” said Chris Mattingly. He’s been matrimonial and family lawyer for the past 25 years, that’s 175 dog years.

Mattingly and other in his profession are paying attention to Alaska.

Yes, Alaska.

Thanks to a newly passed law, pets will be treated more like children during a divorce.

“The court has the authority to look out for what's in the pet's best interest,” said Mattingly about the Alaska law.

Dog owners in the Barkyard Dog Park in Buffalo say the law makes sense and would like to see something similar in New York.

“There's always just one that takes the dog to the vet. There’s always just one that takes them to the dog park or takes them for a walk,” said Nancy Budniewski.
