A Batavia man is facing charges after investigators say he killed his cat by putting it in an oven and turning up the heat.

Firefighters were called to Darren Annovi's apartment on East Main Street around 9 p.m. on Monday on reports of a fire alarm activation. The firefighters were let into the apartment by the building's maintenance man because no one answered the door.

Inside the apartment, firefighters found light smoke coming from the kitchen. They noticed that the stove burners were not on, so they continued to check the apartment for other signs of smoke or fire.  Then the maintenance man opened the oven door and a dead cat partially fell out. They then noticed that all of the oven racks had been removed from the oven and were in the middle of the kitchen floor. After the horrifying discovery firefighters called police to the scene.

After interviewing Annovi, Batavia Police arrested him. Investigators say he intentionally put his house cat inside the oven with the intent to kill it. After the cat was in the oven, he turned on the heat.

The 42-year-old is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. He's being held without bail.
