Police: 88-year-old attacked wife with hammer

An 88-year-old Cheektowaga man stands accused of Attempred Murder, after prosecutors say he tried to kill his wife.

According to the Erie County District Attorney's Office, Martin Turkiewicz assaulted his 86-year-old wife, Rita, Saturday at the Garden Gate Health Care Facility on Union Road.

Police say Turkiewicz struck his wife in the head with a hammer, causing serious injuries.

Garden Gate Health Care released the following statement Monday morning:

Garden Gate Health Care Facility, 2365 Union Road, Cheektowaga, is cooperating with police regarding a domestic incident between a female patient and her husband that took place at the facility on Saturday, September 9, 2017.

We do not have any further details at this time.

The defendant pleaded not guilty and was remanded to jail without bail. He faces charges of Attempted Murder and Assault.
