Buffalo Tough Chains is an initiative that is raising awareness to spread the message of the power of connection.

After Michael Jay Pawelek Junior overdosed in June 2017 because of fentanyl, his family is making the key chains to bring awareness to the opioid epidemic in his memory.

The key chain is made of 16 chain links and one key ring to represent the 17 counties in Western New York.

"It's just a piece of him to remind me just how strong of a family we are. I mean without him we can still you know, stick together as long as we link together as a family that's just the most important part," Bart Hughes, Michael's Brother, said.

The Lakawanna family hopes Tough Chains will help other families with addiction.

50% of the proceeds benefit Kids Escaping Drugs, a nonprofit treatment and education center.
