Medical students at the University at Buffalo are joining forces in the fight against frostbite.

The group, called “Prescription for Warmth,” buys and donates hats, gloves and socks to homeless people in Buffalo.

“Part of the reason we went into medicine was to serve the Greater Buffalo community, so something as simple as this for us will make a huge difference in someone’s life,” Chelsey Ciambella said.

On Friday, the group brought 120 frostbite prevention kits to ECMC.  The delivery came with a warm welcome.

“Every winter, we get a lot of individuals with frostbite,” said Raphael Blochle, a trauma surgeon at ECMC.

“It’s something that, for the most part, is completely preventable,” Blochle added.

In the most serious cases of frost bite, victims must be amputated.
