Erie Co. reports spike in suspected heroin overdose deaths

County leaders hold emergency news conference

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein held an emergency news conference on Thursday to address an alarming spike in recent heroin overdose deaths.

The leaders are sending a warning about a deadly batch of heroin suspected in 7 overdose deaths in the last 24 hours. Poloncarz, urging users to think twice, saying this hit could be a "death sentence.

Dr. Burstein is urging people to keep Narcan readily available as heroin usage increases in western new york.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn is also vowing to charge dealers with murder, if their drug is linked to a deadly overdose.
