A nationwide initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes has made it to Western New York.

The "Million Hearts Screening Initiative" held a screening event at the 2nd Baptist Church in Lackawanna on Monday. The group's goal is to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes over five years.

"The more education we give our members ,the more information we put in their hands, the more likely they are to deal with their health before it deteriorates because it's easier to maintain health than it is to recover health." said Pastor Kinzer Pointer of the Agape Fellowship Baptist Church.

According to the CDC heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. About 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year. That's 1 in every 4 deaths.
