It's considered a step forward for the long vacant Garden Village Plaza in Cheektowaga. Benderson Development, which owns the property, recently submitted an expanded proposal for the parcel to town officials. If the new plan is approved construction could potentially begin in early summer.

The new submission calls for the demolition of the majority of the existing buildings on the north end of the plaza. The former Ames Department Store will be refaced and converted into a warehouse/office facility. A new 95,964 square foot warehouse would replace the buildings that are torn down. A second 185,877 square foot warehouse will be built on the outerparcel.

Benderson originally plan to reface and reuse all of the existing buildings on the north end of the plaza but it was determined it was not cost effective.

Town officials will review the submission for 30 days. A public hearing on the project before the town board is expected in May. If the new plan is approved construction could potentially begin in early summer.
