Depew High School is linking their fitness equipment with their student's smartphones.

The new fitness center at Depew High School is funded by a $1.1 million Carol M. White Physical Education grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Machines are all equipped with scan-able QR codes, which will show students videos of how to properly use fitness equipment.

Students also cycle through the use of fitness tracker watches, which monitor steps and calories burned.

The three-year program encourages healthy eating habits, increasing physical activity and meeting state standards for physical education.

With money from the federal grant, the district is also implementing new fitness centers in the middle and elementary schools.
