Mary Queen of Angels Catholic school in Cheektowaga is set to close at the end of the school year.

According to the Diocese of Buffalo, parents, staff and students were told about the impending closure on Wednesday.

School leaders say the decision comes down to numbers, specifically, declining enrollment. Over the past five years, student enrollment has dropped from 164 students to 103, with the school averaging 11 students per grade.

Mary Queen of Angels was founded back in 1947 and has met the fate of so many local Catholic schools forced to close in recent years due to falling enrollment.

Bishop Richard Malone is assuring parents that the diocese will continue to work closely with impacted families to make sure students still have access to a Catholic education.
